Finishing Up Our Ely, MN Adventure

Finishing Up Our Ely, MN Adventure

We are so far behind on our blog, our last post we were still in Ely, MN. So I am finally Finishing Up Our Ely, MN Adventure.

Kawishiwi Falls

Curt had to work so Teresa took us on a couple of fun adventures. One adventure was a beautiful hike to Kawishiwi Falls. What a beautiful hike, words can’t describe it, and I don’t think my photos do it justice. The falls are beautiful and look at how some of the trees are growing right out of the rocks.

Visiting A Homestead

Next Teresa took us to visit Carol, a homesteader. While she did have a log splitter and a generator she used occasionally, she mostly lives off the land. Carol and her husband left the hustle and bustle of Chicago many years where Carol was a nurse. Her husband passed away a few years ago, but Carol loves the homestead lifestyle so much she will never go back to city life. (I can’t blame her. I think I would like it too, except, I do like all the modern conveniences and electronics.) 🙂

When we first pulled up, Carol was pumping a couple buckets of water out of her well, so we helped her carry them into the house. We spent a couple of hours visiting with Carol and seeing her homestead.

In the pictures, note the tools on the wall, the outhouse, and the beautiful woodstove are not antique collections just for show, they are what Carol uses on a regular basis. The wood greenhouse is where she gets a head start on the short Minnesota growing seasons for her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. Her woodshed isn’t nearly full yet, which she will need for cooking and to get through the long cold Minnesota winter.

We had a great time with Carol and could have spent a whole day visiting with her. This is why we love visiting friends and family, we get to do and see things we would never get to do if we were exploring the area by ourselves. However, time was limited and we had to move on. We are finishing up our Ely, MN adventure and moving on. Watch for our next blog as we head to International Falls.

  1. Hi Dave, They are tearing out 2nd Street in the spring. 3 of our driveways are on 2nd Street so we are waiting until after that is done instead of selling this time of year.
