A Great Week With Friends In Ely, MN

A Great Week With Friends In Ely, MN

We spent a week in late August in Ely, MN with friends Curt and Teresa Ebert and their kids. Gabe, Isabel, and Caleb. Unfortunately, Emily was away at school, so we didn’t get to see her. We had a great week with friends in Ely, MN.

The Eberts were absolutely incredible hosts. They fed us delicious meals several times and took us on many adventures and sightseeing tours.

Canoeing, pictographs, bears, wolves, sightseeing, hiking, waterfalls, and visiting a homestead, are just some of the things the Eberts shared with us during the week. I will share more about those adventures in separate blogs to keep this blog from being way too long.

Worship Service

On Sunday we went to LedgeRock Community Church where Curt is the minister. He had a great message and I was very proud to know that such a good friend has become a great messenger of God’s word.

Fishing

Being a minister and always on call, Curt was very busy while we were there. We did find time to go fishing one evening in our kayaks. Fishing in bass tournaments is how Curt and I met many years ago.

If I remember right, I think we fished Little Long Lake. The fishing was slow, but we both managed to catch a few smallmouth bass. I don’t remember how many and none were big, but it really didn’t matter, we had a great time.

I’m at a point in my life where it really doesn’t matter if I catch fish or how big they are. It’s all about the experience, especially when fishing with old friends. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to catch fish, and big ones too, it just isn’t going to be a disappointment if I don’t.

One of the small norther I caught, this one was 17″

One day when the Eberts were busy, Sherry and I took the kayaks to One Pine Lake. I was told that crappie fishing was good there. It might have been, but I will never know. I couldn’t keep my crappie jigs away from the toothy northern pike. I caught five little northern and lost 6 jigs. Two of the jigs I lost were to big nothern. One I would guess was 35-36″. The other I don’t know how big it was, I never saw it. All I know is before it broke me off, it took off and then went under my kayak. I had no control of it.

    1. It’s a great place, we plan to go back. Where do you stay? Do you fish the same lakes every time?
