Gooseberry Falls State Park, Two Harbors, MN

After visiting family in the Twin Cities, we stayed at Penmarallter Campground near Two Harbors, MN. It is near the North Shore of Lake Superior. It is a very nice basic RV campground. We had water and 50 amp electric, and they had a “honey wagon” that came around to empty our tanks. The campground owners were very nice, but they only had a sight available for two nights.

Two nights before we were there the owner had to shoot a bear in the dumpster. This bear had been showing up more and more and getting into the garbage and had become a nuisance around the campgrounds.

Since we only had two nights, we didn’t have much time to explore the beautiful area. Gooseberry Falls State Park Two Harbors, MN. is a beautiful waterfall system with many trails all the way around. There are at least 13 waterfalls along the North Shore of Lake Superior, but Gooseberry Falls is the only one we had a chance to see.

We went in the middle of the day on a weekday. Apparently there are still a lot of people still not working because of the Corona Virus. The falls were so crowded it was very hard to get a picture without a lot of people being in the pictures.

If you are ever lost in the wilderness, one way to mark your trail to help search and rescue find you is to stack stones. It is something that stands out and never happens in nature. Apparently a lot of kids were lost in the creek bed below Gooseberry Falls State Park, Two Harbors, MN

The Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Two Harbors, MN

On Highway 61 just north of Two Harbors is the Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel. The tunnel was completed in 1994 and it made passage along the North Shore much easier. On the north side of the tunnel is a parking area for a beautiful overlook of Lake Superior. It is part of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, a paved 89-mile trail along the North Shore.

What a view

One neat thing at this site was a “selfie station” where you can put your phone to get a good selfie with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. When we were there the sun was behind us so the selfie was pretty dark.

The North Shore of Lake Superior is absolutely beautiful. If you go there, try to spend more time then we had. It is beautiful and there is a whole lot to see and do starting with Gooseberry Falls.
