San Antonio Riverwalk

San Antonio Riverwalk

As I mentioned in our blog yesterday, we walked the San Antonio Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is a very beautiful two story walk along the Sam Antonio River. We were there on a Thursday afternoon in January, so it was not very crowded at all.

The beautiful San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio Riverwalk has many restaurants and a few small craft and gift shops. Some of the restaurants included; Bubba Gumps, Dick’s Last Resort, The Rain Forrest Cafe, and Joe’s Crab Shack. But we have eaten at all of those and we wanted to eat somewhere we’ve never been to before.

A pedestrian bridge on the Riverwalk

There were also some fine dining resturaunts where the appetizers are $20+ and the main courses are $50+. And I’m now retired and on a fixed income and they weren’t in my budget. Or as Sherry would tell you, I’m a cheapskate.

So we decided to go to a BBQ place that someone had recommended about a 20 minute drive away. It turned out to be just a little joint in a strip mall and there was only one car out front at 5:30.

Yet another change of plans: next door there was a place called Bubba’s 33 and their parking lot was packed. It was a pizza and burger joint. I’ll let Sherry tell you more about it in her blog review.

Fine dining

Back to the Riverwalk, they also had River boat cruises, basically a guided tour on what they called barges that held about 30 people. But neither one of us wanted to do a cruise.

Another pedestrian bridge

We didn’t see any of the gondolas they had when I was here 36 years ago. These are the long boats with a guy in the back using a long push pole to navigate the river for the tours. Unfortunately I don’t think they have them any more.

Above is a waterfall that comes out of a hotel. It’s really neat in that it then drains into the river through slots in the sidewalk that you walk over.

San Antonio Riverwalk “Lovers Locks”

Lovers Locks

On a bridge over the river there is a chain link fence that is full of locks left by lovers. The custom is if lovers secure a lock here and throw the key into the river their love will last forever. I’m not so sure it works, we found a few that had more than one lock attached together with different names. Apparently the first one didn’t last forever.

Below are some interesting locks we found.

There were several antique locks
This one shaped like a heart
Apparently this guy vowed to give up drinking, he locked up his bottle opener.
This one looked like a turtle
This one must have vowed to give up the kinky stuff, they locked up the fuzzy handcuffs.
The wedding Chapel

Just in case your love is forever, right behind you as you look at the locks, is the Court House Wedding Chapel. They sell locks too!

I hope you are enjoying our blog as much as I’m enjoying writing them. If you are, please share it with your friends and family. If you’re not, please share it with your enemies.

  1. Sounds like it was better in the 80’s when we were there with the youth group. Sounds like fun though.
