One of the first things they asked us when we got there was if we had dogs. When we told them we had 2 small dogs they said to look very carefully before we let them out. Wild gators are known to cross the parking lot at night and they would be a great little snack.
Airboat ride
We had a great time on the airboat and walking tour. We started out on an airboat tour of the swamp marshes. It was a blast, and the airboats can do a lot of things the bass boats I’m used to can not do. We rode through the weeds and did 360-degree turns. On the airboat ride, we saw a couple of gators at a distance.
There was one wild 8 foot alligator who hangs out just across the fence from the ones in the ranch. I think they are planning a jail break. It is possible he was one who escaped during hurricane Katrina.
Once we got into the farm on the walking tour, it was a different story. They had dozens of gators and we got to feed them also.
They also had a pen with baby Gators in them. And after the tour we got to hold a baby alligator.
Normally they sell Gators for meat, hides, and taxidermy. However, according to our airboat Captain, Sam, since hurricane Katrina destroyed the ranch in 2005 they are still keeping the babies to replenish their stock.
