One of the things I plan to blog about is the gadgets and equipment I use on our adventures. In this blog, I will post about one of the essentials I think is absolutely necessary if you are pulling an RV as big as ours, the RV specific Rand McNally OverDryve 7 GPS.

Vinny (our nickname for our Forrest River Vengeance) is 42’8″ long, 13’4″ high, 8’6″ wide and has a GVWR of 18,000 lbs. He’s a big boy and there are many bridges he can’t go under and roads he can’t travel because of weight. While we are traveling about the country, it is imperative we don’t end up on one of these roads. With a rig that big, we can’t just turn around on a dime if we get somewhere Vinny won’t fit.

In order to keep us on roads that are safe for us to travel, we bought an RV specific Rand McNally OverDryve 7 GPS. This is a tablet/GPS. It can do a lot more than we will use it for. You can connect to your phone via blue tooth to make calls, connect to the internet, check emails, play games, etc. It also has a dashcam that we will use, but haven’t used yet.

We programmed in Vinny’s dimensions and weight and the OverDryve 7 will safely direct us to our destinations. We have only used it a few times, but so far we really like it. One thing we really like is that 1/2 of the screen pops up when it’s time to get off on the interstate showing which lane you need to be in. This is important because, with a rig this long, we need plenty of time to get in the correct lane especially in heavy traffic.

It has taken a little bit of getting used to for inputting our destination, but I’m sure it will become easier with time as we use it more.
